The Connoisseur Watch – Patek Philippe

Posted on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 in Uncategorized

In 1901 watch maker manufacturer to royalty – Patek Philippe – made a watch that is favored and savored by the connoisseur today. This was the PP square shaped hinged watch with numerous dials. The existence of this rare and early watch was confirmed upon reviewing the PP archives (it was recently divested at a Christie’s sale). The numerals are dauphine style (reminding one of the Roger Dubuis styles of today) and in radium – the radioactive element that glows in the dark and is now banned from watch making. The watch is also historic as the use of radium led to the development of occupational disease labor laws. The collector will not find an exact copy or replica Patek Philippe watch of this exact model!

Nor can you find a close match of this antique model. However, you can find stunning fakes and replicas of this grand and royal watch maker. One striking example is the “PPP Grand Complications Celestial Men’s Watch”. Our Sun and Solar System are superimposed against a magnificent view of the Milky Way Galaxy. Not only that, the “Celestial” also has a star compass over the royal blue sky, solar system and the galaxy. The look of this watch alone will send you into a lunar trajectory. The case is of “18kt White Gold” set against a black leather band. It is almost impossible to believe that any replica manufacturer could produce such a watch.

Another astronomical replica is the “PPP Grand Complications Sky Moon Men’s Watch”. The seller advises that this complication also has a tourbillon – but is not immediately visible due to the many and various other functions available on the watch dial! Even the best replica makers have their limitations. Not only that, but this Patek Philippe replica watch is also a perpetual calendar. These are both “must-haves” for the armchair astronomer.
